The road file stays with you.
The Atlas works without an account, and it is built so that the least possible information ever leaves your browser. This page lists everything that does.
Nothing required
No account, sign-in, email, phone number, address, government identification, or social profile is ever asked for. The Atlas never collects a home address, a persistent precise location, your full road file, your saved-stop history, background location, or your travel history.
Your road file
Saved stops, their order, private notes, and your preferred directions provider are stored in your browser's local storage under the key unquiet-atlas-road-file. They are never sent to the Atlas. They are not synchronized anywhere. Clearing browser data removes them, which is why the road-file page offers an export. Importing a road file reads the file in your browser only; unrecognized entries are ignored and nothing is uploaded.
Opening directions and sources
Opening directions sends the stop coordinates to the mapping provider you chose, in the address bar of the link. That provider then sees them under its own privacy policy. Opening an official source, a partner link, or a map tile request works the same way: the destination sees the request. Map tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap's tile servers, so your browser requests them directly from OpenStreetMap.
Location
The field-file index offers to sort by distance from your current position. Your browser asks for permission only after you press the button, the position is used once in your browser to sort the list, and it is not stored, not sent to the Atlas, and not included in analytics. Searching by state or city is always an equal alternative.
Analytics
The Atlas counts a short, fixed list of product events using its own first-party endpoint: map opens, searches, filter use, file views, source exits, save and remove actions, route additions, road-file opens and exports, directions opens, partner exits, correction starts and completions, and map, search, and storage failures. An event carries the event name, the first path segment of the page, and at most a state code, a category, a provider name, or a failure reason. No cookies, no identifiers, no IP address is stored, no query text, no coordinates, and no road-file contents. Counts are aggregated per day.
Corrections
The corrections form stores what you type in a private editorial inbox. Name and email are optional and are used only to follow up on that correction. Submissions are rate-limited by a temporary, non-stored hash of the connection to block spam; the hash is never written down. Nothing you send is published automatically or shared.
Hosting
The site is served through a hosting platform fronted by Cloudflare, which may set a functional security cookie used for bot protection. The Atlas itself sets no cookies. Fonts and media are served from this domain; no third-party font or analytics scripts load.
Offline copies
If your browser installs the Atlas as an app, previously opened pages and the application shell may be cached on your device. Cached field files show the date they were last loaded and their source-check date, and warn you to recheck the official source before traveling.
