Earliest record in this file: The modern Elkhorn story centers on a reported encounter in the fall of 1989, although PBS also records an older 1936 account from nearby Jefferson.
What was reported: The 1989 witness described a fur-covered, fanged figure feeding on roadkill beside Bray Road.
What the record supports: A local reporter covered the report, later witnesses added accounts, and later photographs remained ambiguous. No animal was established.
Ordinary explanations: The PBS discussion includes a wolf, bear, or dog among the ordinary-animal explanations.
Cultural afterlife: The Beast moved from an uneasy rural story into Elkhorn's public identity, including community programming and Beast-themed events.
